This $20.6M West Virginia DOH Project included the replacement of existing bridges with a six-span continuous curved steel plate girder bridge on drilled caisson foundations. The project was completed with 32 caissons with depths in excess of 115ft. Precast, post-tensioned, pier cap beams were supported on conventional CIP concrete piers founded on drilled caisson foundations. Abutments were also supported on drilled caisson foundations.
The westbound bridge has a total length of 655ft and the eastbound bridge has a total length of 598ft. Each bridge is 57.25ft wide and will carry three (3), 12ft traffic lanes and 12ft outside and 6ft inside shoulders.
Challenges included tight over head and lateral access with active traffic on I-64 east and west and Hal Greer Boulevard.
