Brayman was selected by Bechtel as the design/build deep foundation contractor for First Energy’s Sammis Power Plant FGD/SCR upgrades. In order to meet federally mandated clean air regulations, Brayman was contracted to design and install over 5,000 driven H-piles and over 300 drilled micropiles for the deep foundations of various structures across the project site.
Ultimately, four different driven H-pile designs and two different micropiles designs were incorporated in the multitude of new facilities proposed for this site. The new 990ft chimney required over 750 H-pile totaling in excess of 10 miles of steel pile material at a single location. Access to all of the driven H-pile work was from land and incorporated up to four pile driving crews at one time. Scheduling of the piling crews was critical to the success of this project since many of the design/build foundations were scattered throughout the project site and approved for construction as they came available. The majority of the micropile work was accessed from barges along the Ohio River. Overall, the project incorporated over 75 miles of driven H-piles over a 16 month period.
