From Apprentices to Industry Professionals: Turning Opportunity Into Long-Term Success
Growth in the trades isn’t determined by time alone. It’s built through consistency, ownership, and a willingness to seize opportunities when they arise. Damien Green and Austin Neff represent two outcomes of the same path through the Brayman Apprenticeship Program.
Damien entered the program with Class 11 two years ago. With an open mind and a willingness to learn, he found his niche in steel fabrication. He approached each day with purpose, took on increasing responsibility, and consistently contributed beyond expectations. That shift in mindset became the turning point in his development. His growth became evident as he transitioned to working more independently in the fabrication shop and contributing to production on large-scale projects.
As Damien’s value to the Team became increasingly clear, the trust he earned led directly to his transition into a full-time role with Advantage Steel and Construction. Effective June 1, his hard work and consistency will be recognized as he steps into the Fabrication Shop full-time, demonstrating how sustained commitment creates opportunity.
Meanwhile, Austin joined the program with Class 13 about a year ago. Although he brought limited construction experience, he had a clear goal of building a long-term career as an ironworker. At the time, Austin was a recent high school graduate with only a summer’s worth of experience in basement waterproofing. He understood the demands of hard work and sought guidance to turn that experience into a career.
Austin had not previously worked in a Team-driven environment, so receiving feedback and coaching was new to him. However, the program’s expectations and standards challenged him to become more engaged and collaborative. He embraced the culture around him, built strong relationships, and demonstrated his commitment through both his personal development and the success of his team.
A defining moment in Austin’s path came when he independently applied to the Local 3 Ironworkers Apprenticeship Program. Although he was not accepted on his first attempt, he remained determined.
Over the next two months, Austin worked with the career development coach to focus his study efforts on practice exam results. He refined his interview skills and applied feedback to prepare for his next opportunity. Rather than leaving the outcome to chance, he committed himself to the process. His focus earned him recognition for a high exam score and acceptance into the Local 3 Ironworkers Apprenticeship Program. Austin became a union ironworker apprentice with Advantage Steel and Construction and began working in field operations with the steel erection crew at the Graff Bridge project.
Damien and Austin demonstrate how the program prepares individuals for successful, long-term careers in the construction trades. They did more than learn fundamental skills; they took ownership of their work and their future. That kind of growth strengthens the entire operation.
Developing Professionals Inside the Mechanic Shop
When people think about construction sites, they often picture crews at work, equipment moving materials, and the clangs and bangs of setting forms and driving piles. What they don’t see is the work that happens off the jobsite that keeps everything running.
Behind every successful project is a fleet of vehicles, equipment, and machines that must operate effectively. Maintaining that equipment requires skilled mechanics who understand how machines work, from engine function to diagnostics, and how to keep systems running reliably.
The Brayman Apprenticeship Program provides apprentices with exposure to a wide range of equipment. Throughout the program, they develop their skills through real-world, hands-on experience working on fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, small engines, and specialty tools used in construction operations.
Early in the program, apprentices are introduced to the fundamentals of shop operations. Assisting experienced mechanics, helping maintain the shop and workspace, and supporting preventive maintenance builds familiarity with the equipment, tools, and systems essential to construction operations. As apprentices gain experience, their responsibilities expand. They assist with diagnostics, perform minor repairs, and complete maintenance work independently while continuing to work under the guidance of experienced mechanics.
A unique benefit of the Brayman Apprenticeship Program is the exposure apprentices gain to a variety of environments, operations, and equipment. Working alongside seasoned mechanics, they develop a broad range of mechanical experiences that builds strong foundational knowledge. In the process, they begin to discover where their interests and strengths may lead them within a mechanical trade.
Apprentices are not simply learning how to fix equipment; they are developing the knowledge, judgment, and professional habits that define skilled mechanics.
Brayman Apprenticeship Program: Built Side-By-Side
By: Angelo Melendez III, Development Coach
Working side-by-side with experienced professionals is a core pillar of the Brayman Apprenticeship Program. It’s simple in principle but powerful in execution, allowing our apprentices to gain experience that includes immediate, meaningful feedback. Repetitive actions allow apprentices to practice skills with a steady cadence, and their proximity to the professionals who mentor them into the industry gives them the opportunity to correct mistakes and complete their work to the precision and quality standards that define Brayman Construction.
Over the last couple of months, apprentices in the rebar tie shop have been part of assembling structures for the Montgomery Lock & Dam Project. Because they are part of daily production, apprentices quickly learn different tie methods, spacing measurements, and how the blueprint translates into rebar configurations on the shop floor. They develop an understanding of what they’re building and its importance to the project downstream.
Our apprentices learn more than manual skills. They learn sequencing, communication, and forward thinking. This hands-on immersion builds competency, confidence, and camaraderie. When apprentices work alongside experienced Team Members, they become part of the culture Brayman Construction has cultivated–one that demands focus and effort, rewards initiative, and supports growth.
This kind of learning creates a loop of skill acquisition within active production–learn, practice, correct, refine. Traditional classroom instruction cannot replicate skill progression in context, where expectations are real, and accountability is inherent to the work. Over time, repetition in real conditions turns experience into dependable capability.
Brayman Apprenticeship Program: Strengthening the Foundation
By: Angelo Melendez III, Development Coach
The construction trades continue to face growing workforce challenges, and meeting those challenges requires persistence, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to investment in people. Brayman Construction’s Apprenticeship Program continues to evolve and remains a strong, reliable entry point into the construction trades.
While the program is adapting, its mission and purpose remain unchanged. At its core, the program continues to provide individuals with meaningful exposure to construction work while building foundational knowledge, skills, and experience that support long-term career growth. Recent program updates focus on strengthening the alignment between learning and real-world application, ensuring knowledge gained in the program is consistently reinforced through hands-on experience.
What has worked so well for the program continues to define it: first-hand experience paired with direct mentorship to develop strong foundational skills for careers in the construction trades. Training enhancements reinforce the relationship between skill development, safety, and quality craftsmanship, all central elements that prepare apprentices for long-term success in the industry.
The Apprenticeship Program reflects Brayman Construction’s core values and standards. Our commitment to its success represents a broader responsibility to carry those values forward through continued mentorship. Each apprentice who joins our projects becomes a building block on a foundation shaped by Brayman’s highly skilled and knowledgeable trades professionals. The Brayman Apprenticeship Program serves as both a jumpstart to a career and an opportunity to develop what it takes to contribute meaningfully to their Teams, add value to their projects, and support the future of the trades.
Same objective. Clearer vision. Sharper execution.
