Brayman was subcontracted to install a design-build soil nailing system to support a road slip along Route 44 in Lycoming County, PA. The project included installing 75,000 SF of galvanized wire mesh, 6,300 SF of rockfall anchorage wire mesh, 5,000 LF of 40/20 mm hollow bar anchors, and 23,500 LF of #10 solid bar anchors.
The Team first stabilized the roadway using a 13-foot–high shotcrete wall. More than 750 CY of high-strength shotcrete were placed to support the re-established road elevation, utility poles, and guardrails. In the final phase, Brayman installed hollow bar anchors and slope stability mesh to complete the work lower down the slope and closer to the adjacent creek.
With Route 44 serving as the primary access road to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon—a popular summer camping and fishing destination—it was essential to keep the road open throughout construction using a single land restriction and timed traffic lights. Additional challenges beyond the limited work areas along a steep incline included protection of the Eastern Hellbender salamander habitat. Multiple layers of environmental protection were incorporated to maintain the Hellbender ecosystem.
