PennDOT I-84 Bridge Caissons Lackawanna County
Brayman Construction Corporation was subcontracted to install caissons for a bridge replacement project on I-84 outside of Scranton, PA. The scope of work included drilling 16-each, 48” diameter caissons at one location with 42” diameter rock sockets and an approximate total drill depth of 603 LF of soil and 208 LF of rock. At the second location, the Team drilled 9-each, 48” diameter caissons with 42” diameter rock sockets and an approximate total drill depth of 432 LF of soil and 459 LF of rock. Brayman also drilled 4-each, 48” diameter caissons with an approximate total drill depth of 72 LF of soil and 6-each, 54” diameter caissons with an approximate total drill depth of 126 LF of soil and 3 LF of rock to support sign structures. The shafts were constructed with permanent casing. Given the rocky conditions, boulders and cobbles posed challenges during the drilling process.
