Plant and Design-Build Contract for Reconstruction of Berth 7
Plant and Design-Build Contract for Reconstruction of Berth 7
Brayman and Shoreline Foundation, Inc. of Miami, Florida, was contracted by Kingston Wharves Limited to design and reconstruct Berth 7 at the Port of Kingston in Kingston, Jamaica. This project was a Joint Venture in which Brayman was the lead contractor.
Initial work on the project included geotechnical investigations with land and sea-based core boring, ground-penetrating radar, and bathymetric surveys of the harbor at the port, after which the design was completed. The next phase of work consisted of reconstructing the 600-foot-long berth, demolishing the existing sea wall cap and concrete port apron, and building a new seawall comprised of driven 44-inch pipe piles, a driven sheet pile tieback wall, and 130-foot-long tieback bar anchors connecting the new sea wall to the anchor wall. The new sea wall was built 50 feet into the harbor from the existing berth. This 50-foot area was then backfilled with a locally quarried material called “Shingle,” and the new concrete apron was poured to add access for large mobile port cranes. Other improvements included new high mast lighting, potable water, fire protection line extensions, and upgraded drainage. Brayman also completed harbor dredging to allow for larger vessel entrance and docking.
The Joint Venture project in Jamaica wrapped up with practical completion being given on December 5, 2023. With full use of the berth, Kingston Wharves was able to hit the ground running and immediately completely filled the berth with over 1,000 vehicles unloaded from shipping vessels for distribution all over the Caribbean.
