Multi-Phase Project: Phase

VDOT D13 Rte 58 4 Lane Rhea Valley

Brayman was contracted by Kanawha Stone Company for assistance on a project for the reconstruction and upgrade of Route 58 in a very rural area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Washington County, Virginia. Brayman’s scope was for the construction of twin 475-foot, 2-span bridges, with each bridge having a pier in the South Fork of the Holston River. This river is known for its pristine waters and abundant native trout, and as a recreational destination.

The piers were approximately 80 feet tall and were built in cofferdams on the edge of the river. Abutment B has one of the top 5 highest mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls in Virginia at 52 feet, and rests on drilled pipe piles. Abutment A is founded on rock on the west side of the river. Eight-foot steel girders were erected in pairs to eliminate problems with the long spans. The decks consist of normal concrete with railings.

After the new bridge was completed and the roadway had been moved, the existing bridge was demolished. All work was completed while maintaining foot traffic on the Virginia Creeper Trail, which is the highest volume trail in Virginia.
