SR 351, Section B10 Koppel Bridge (Fifth Avenue)
Brayman Construction was contracted to replace the existing Koppel Bridge spanning the Beaver River between Koppel Borough and North Sewickley Township, PA.
Work involved construction of a new 1,200 LF four-span steel girder bridge built downstream of the existing bridge over a major river crossing. Substructure work consisted of one river pier along with piers on both banks. The southern approach utilizes three retaining walls and the northern approach includes a rock cut. The Team installed cofferdams, implemented traffic detours, and coordinated utility relocation. For Wall 2B, Brayman self-performed the construction of an anchored soldier pile retaining wall that was greater than 20’ in height. The wall consists of 16-each beams, 48” diameter caissons, and 8-each strand anchors. Scope also included bituminous pavement, drainage, guide rail, landscaping, signing, pavement marking, waterline relocation and demolition of the original structure.
Challenges included coordinating with multiple active railroads.
